WHS - Program Launcher 1.2
# Friday, August 03, 2007

Ok, I've been back for almost a week now, and I just barely found time to pump out a new version with only one small change.

Change Log 1.2

- Removed settings tab

Version 1.2 is now released, unless I hear about some bugs or some interesting feature requests this will probably be the last version.  I think it does what it was meant to do, and I'd like to get started on my other add-in.

Sorry there is no way to stop it from going to the desktop, the console is just a remote desktop connection. If you want to console to open properly after it has openned to the desktop, just log off your connection instead of closing it.

Hi Dan,

I don't know if you have access to the RTM build, yet, but...... The Program Launcher Add-in installs fine. But when you go to add an app and click the Browse button, it crashes the WHS console.

Hi Dan,

On version 1.2, when trying to add a program to run, I'm getting the whole server console crashing. Here is what is displayed in the event viewer:-

EventType clr20r3, P1 homeserverconsole.exe, P2 6.0.0.0, P3 46e0a6f8, P4 whscommon, P5 6.0.0.0, P6 46e0a59c, P7 30d, P8 2f, P9 system.argumentexception, P10 NIL.

After installation I've noticed I have issues (slow connection) with server console. Also after disconnect from console and reconnect I was logging into server's desktop instead of console. So I have uninstalled it through console (settings->Add-Ins->uninstall). After it I cannot connect to console anymore from any PC. Getting responce window with an error. Is there any way to revive console without reinstalling the whole server?

Hi, Dan.

Any progress on this? I'd really like to see Program Launcher working 100% again! Really love it!

I am having the same issues as 'Eugene' (Nov 6th post). I've also noticed that I cannot remote into my other PCs using the ASoft AutoExit Add-in that was previously working fine. Would really like to get my WHS console back in order as this is no good. I either need my WHS back to before I installed this add-in (uninstalled and no improvement) or working as it should be. Did this add-in 'break' my WHS OS by doing something with some Windows Server 2003 commands that should not be used with WHS? I sure hope not! If this is the case, then this Add-In needs to be removed from public consumption NOW!!! Please help!

This is great! One question: Is there any way around the authentication issue? I have a portal which requires a login/password. Am I out of luck? --thanks

Ok couple of points

Chris And Eugene- this is a known issue with the console, nothing I can do about it. From inside the console click your WHS start button and log off. When you re-open the console it will be back to normal. My add-in did not break your other add-in, you'll have to talk to that dev.

To everyone that is saying this doesn't work with the OEM I'll need an event viewer entry or something cause it works fine on my system. I'd love to help you guys out, so if it is easier email me at <blog> <at> <digitstech> . <ca>

wow gold - not really sure I understand your question, feel free to drop me a line at the above email address

Hi, Dan.

Can this issue have anything to do with .net framework 3.0 not being installed? I've currently got 2.0 installed. Installing 3.0 as we speak, and I'll get back to you if that solves the problem.

mmmm can't say that is impossible since I do have the 3.0 framework installed. Very interested to know. Well now that I think about it, does 3.0 install as part of the updates to WHS? Cause otherwise I've not installed 3.0 on my WHS server. I just did the OEM install, and installed the latest version of my add-in and it worked.

Unfortunetly that event viewer entry is pretty vague :)

The more I type the more I think, I have an idea what might be causing it and will take a look as soon as I get home.

Hey guys I posted a new 1.3 version, only real difference is a bit better logging to the event viewer (Application) around the browse button.

Dan,

I got it working again. I simply uninstalled both add-ins (yours and the ASoft AutoExit), then reinstalled yours and then AutoExit and all is well again. I find that moving between the WHS Console and the actual Server desktop is sometimes a little quirky (just doesn't always wanna play nice for some reason), but it does work. Thanks.

That solved it for me. The new version, that is. Everything is working like a charm. Thanks Dan!

Hi, great program. I've just used it for my WHS to run games like Call Of Duty but i have hit a problem.

Everytime i go to run them it won't run the program because it can't find the important file which is there as i can run the games in remote desktop mode.

Could you add a Start in box just like shortcuts have so i can correct this problem.

Or if you can help me i'd be grateful.

Keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!

Program Launcher is a very nice idea. There's one very useful feature that would be wonderful to have: currently if you launch Windows Media Player, it does not play on the Home Server. This is probably because you don't set "Local Resources" to play on the remote server. Would it be possible for you to add this feature? Thank you.
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 2:50:20 PM (Eastern Standard Time, UTC-05:00)
Not exactly sure what is involved in setting 'Local Resources' but the short answer is no :)
I'm not special casing, simply just launching executables. There is an Admin Console addin out there that might do what you are looking for though.

is it possible to add a destination folder for a specific target?

I got my downloads in one shared folder \\servername\Downloads\TV\series1 and the rar files in that folder should unzip automatically to \\servername\Videos\TV\series1

Dan, Program Launcher is great. I'm visiting my parents and needed to restart an app on my WHS. Normally it would have to wait until I got home, but now I can start it from here.
Thanks for a really useful add-in.
